Carbon Farming practises: Contribution of tree plantations in carbon stocks

We are all aware that plants sequester carbon, capturing carbon dioxide from atmosphere, and carbon is then transformed into biomass through photosynthesis.

In C-FARMs LIFE project, project partners are studying how the different tree plantations occur in this practice.

Firstly,  a poplar plantation mapping in Lombardy region will be carried out, on the basis of Copernicus data.

In a second step, a full analysis of the current use of the Harvested Wood Products (HWP) produced in the area on a representative sample of farms will be performed.

Qualitative and quantitative data for each plantation will focus on the effects on living biomass, organic carbon in minerals soils and HWP.

The carbon mitigation analysis will include the contribution of the post-harvesting processes.

The project partner FederlegnoArredo is leading this activity, working together with Confagricoltura, CREA-PB, Università della Tuscia, PEFC Italy, Rete Clima and the CMCC Foundation with the ultimate goal of create a list of plantation type in Lombardy region and a Carbon farming database on the effects of the selected plantations in connection with the final use of wood products.

To disseminate this expected results, a specific brochure reporting the results and recommendations for the application of carbon farming practice in plantations and its value chain will be printed and spread at the end of the project.

The project supports the design and implementation of targeted payments for the application of Carbon Farming practices through the development of a regulatory framework for a carbon certification system in collaboration with relevant actors and institutions.
