Saturday October the 1st, two of the partners of the LIFE C-FARMs project, CMCC and PEFC Italia, brought their voices to the international scientific dissemination event “Food & Science Festival” in Mantova which was held from 30 September to 2 October.
During the event that aims to bring together agriculture and culture, science and pleasure, the meeting “What are we talking about when we talk about carbon farming” was held. Lucia Perugini (CMCC) and Antonio Brunori (PEFC Italy) among the participants.
Lucia Perugini, Senior scientific manager in CMCC Italy (Euro-Mediterranean Center Foundation on Climate Change) spoke about the evolution of thinking on EU agriculture funding and the choices recently made by EU policy to reduce the climate impact of this primary sector.
The Secretary General of PEFC Italy, Antonio Brunori, on the other hand, highlighted the fundamental role of certifications in the agroforestry aso tools able to guarantee the sustainability of processes and products in carbon farming practices.
An important focus was given to the role of forests for the contribution to the sequestration of atmospheric carbon and to the growing interest in decarbonisation that other productive sectors could potentially carry out (agroforestry, animal husbandry, management of pastures and arable crops) for the improvement of Carbon on soil. With this regard, the LIFE C-FARMs project and its objectives were presented.
The LIFE C-FARMs project, officially started in December 2021, is in full swing and the first results regarding the correct practices to be adopted in the agroforestry field for greener cultivation are coming. The project focuses on companies operating in the Lombardy region, but the fruits of the work can be replicated on a national and international scale.
As the slogan of this edition of the Food & Science Festival states “in order to cultivate knowledge it is important to study problems and find solutions, but also to disseminate the results obtained to all stakeholders”. Only in this way can we think of educating to effectively combat the effects of climate change.
